Kris and Mary,

I have known Kris and Mary Mewton for about over three years now.  The first
time we met on-line was when they joined my webring, The Ferret Family
WebRing (shameless plug).  Any way, I met Kris and Mary last year at the
Chicago Show and a few of their babies too.  I have only good things to say
about them and the way they care for our fuzzbutts.  The love that is in
their, yes their eyes when they are looking at the ferrets is unbelievable.

When I have had past questions and scares about my ferrets, Mary is always
there to help me out.  I would recommend their shelter and ferrets to anyone
at anytime. Those ferrets know only love and good care from the Mewton's.

My hat is off to you Kris and Mary

Here is my testimonial.

Back in 1997, I heard about a lady that was sheltering ferrets in Warren. I
had no name or phone number to contact her. Nobody seemed to know anything
about her except her name was Mary. Well, when the KODO incident took place,
numerous people surfaced. One of those people was the mysterious Mary. I got
to know Mary and her husband Kris over the next several years.

On my visits to their shelter, some announced but others unannounced, I found
out that if you wanted to talk to either of them it was usually while they
were cleaning cages or attending to a sick or injured ferret. It was very
rare to find them just sitting around relaxing. Whether it was medicating a
sick ferret or giving a sits(SP) bath to one with an open wound, it was
always something to keep them on their toes. Cage cleaning takes up a good
portion of their day and they both work full time. All ferrets, under their
care, get time out of their cages to run and play. The little critters always
come first.  Mary and Kris have devoted their lives to ferrets, especially
those that are unadoptable for one reason or another. No five or six people
could come to their house and take over the care of these ferrets so they
could take off for a week or so on vacation.

Mary and Kris have been involved with a local vet that does ferret surgeries,
neuters, spays, adrenalectomies, spleenectomies and other surgeries that
these little ones require to maintain a good quality of life. This vet does
these on her days off to help out the shelter. I have been there when one
does not make it or is so full of cancer that it is necessary to euthanize it
while it is under anesthesia. They, Mary and Kris, both are very upset when
this happens. It is like they were their own personals not shelter ferrets.
They care very much for them.

I have seen them take in ferrets that will never be adoptable. The bald from
adrenal disease, the old ferrets of 5, 6 or even 7 years of age and even the
sick. They know that most of these little ones will never leave their
shelter. Their does come a time when cage space is far less than the space
needed to house additional ferrets that come in.  Some of these ferrets are
sent to holding homes and others are sent to other shelters in Ohio and other
parts of Michigan. No ferret has ever been air shipped anywhere.

MKARESQ shelter is not a money maker, far from that. Mary and Kris foot the
bill for almost everything that is needed to run their shelter. The adoption
fees generally don't cover the cost of housing, food and most definitely, the
medical costs incurred for each ferret that comes through the door.

I would highly recommend their shelter to anyone that is looking for an adult
ferret as their first or a cage mate for their own ferret.

Mkaresq

HI, Ii got my ferret feb 1998 i went to makaresq and  i was shocked to see all the ferrets they had! all
the cages and ferrets were very clean, healthy and  very happy. their whole house was constructed into a
ferret proofed oversized playground for the ferrets  many were running around very content and happy.
I knew a very little about ferrets at the time and kris and mary taught me alot about  ferrets and was very
perceptive to all my  questions and concerns right off the bat! they  helped spark a interest in owning ferrets as
good pets. when i needed help about anything ferret related  2 years later they are still there for me if i have a
ferret-related question these ppl are the best! If it  wasn't for thier santly efforts man of these ferrets
would be neglected, abused if not dead! they pay out  of thier own pockets and never hardly have extra help
for the ferrets so their love is 24/7 they clean cages  and take care of ferrets constantly w/out ever
complaining or growing tiresome so please leave these great ppl alone and don't flame them because you
don't  know these great hero's or you wouldn't be doing this!
I now have 7 ferrets now i would get more from them  too in a heartbeat from mkareq and i suggest anyone
that wants a ferret stop by here instead of the  petstore, give a 2nd chance to a lonely fuzzy who  just wants a
home, and someone to love and call their  own....

Hi Kris

To  those of you flaming the MKARESQ shelter I would like to add my
views:
I have known Kris & Mary for over 5 years.
I am in there shelter on a regular basis, and know that it is always clean, the ferrets well cared for and happy,
and those ferrets who need medical attention always get the best of care.  Mary & Kris are always
on the go when I am there they are cleaning cages, feeding ferrets, attending to the ones who need medicine, playing with
the ferrets etc. If you have ever  been in there shelter you would know this TOO !! I   stand 100%
behind MKARESQ and  have no problems  in sending someone to MKARESQ who is looking for a ferret.

Shelter Attack :

I know a lot of you read the alt.pets.ferrets also. I have seen your names there and read some of the posts.
I am starting here and will post to that list also. First Mary also known as Ferretfire runs the make a rescue
shelter here in MI. I have been to Mary's countless times. I have adopted from her and I have a foster child of
hers. So I think I am qualified to say some things about her. She has been attacked on the apf and I know that
you will think "consider the source" (Nanci) but it's not enough for Mary. She has taken to heart that even after
all of the GOOD she has done someone might actually believe  Nanci.
Why Mary would think that I don't know but I will set some things straight here. I have dropped in on
Mary several times. I have seen with my own eyes that Mary sits and feeds sick babies, I have been there to help
clean cages and let me tell you they were never real dirty. They are cleaned everyday. Even when there was 60
ferrets at her house she had each and every cage cleaned every day. Kris and Mary have a great system there
and it works. I know that all the babies there are held, kissed, fed, and I have personally helped on bath day. I
have seen  Mary cry over a ferret that has gone to the bridge. I have seen both   Mary and Kris play with the kids
running around in the kitchen.
I have seen them kiss and hug them. I know that the last kisses my Mr. Snowman gave were to Kris. So how
can anyone say the things that Nanci is saying? I don't have a clue. Mary's shelter is well run and the ferrets have
a safe environment while they wait for a new home.
I also know that Mary talks to the people that adopt from her and is there to answer any question they might
have. She also has not adopted to some people because she felt that they were not good ferret parents.
She has done a lot of volunteer work to get the message out to people on the care of ferrets. She not only runs a
shelter but also is director of a rescue group that has worked hard in helping others.
The only thing I can tell you about Nanci is the onetime dealing I had with her. I asked her to ferret sit for me
last year. I made arrangements with her in April for July everything was all set until a week before I was about to
leave when Nanci called me and asked me if I could find another sitter. She had to many other peoples ferrets
coming in to sit with. Lucky for me I found a sitter.
If anyone believes anything that Nanci has said against Mary, then I would like to set them striaght. She runs
a great shelter and is a caring wonderful person.

Dear Ferret Owner's ,

Kris and Mary are among the most dedicted to ferret
causes I have ever met.  Their tireless efforts in
running MKARESQ speak for themselves.  Countless
ferrets have found homes, or help through their
efforts.  No matter how tired they are or how much is
going on in their lives they manage to be there for
the ferrets.  I applaud them and their efforts.  If a
small percentage of the population were as dedicated
to they, there would be no problem with homeless
animals in the USA.

Dear Kris and Mary,

I have had a tough time writing this letter because when I sit back and think of all that you have helped me with and all that I want to share, it’s a little overwhelming.  I would have to write a book to share all the wonderful things you have done to help me.
My name is Justine and I have a tiny little girl named Dookie who will be six in May.  Until Dookie fell ill in June 2000, my knowledge of ferrets was very limited except for the fact that I love Dookie with all my heart, and like the cats, I made sure she got her shots once a year.  Kris and Mary have taught me so much!
When Dookie first got sick we (my vet and I) thought it was a vaginal infection.  To make a long story short, I ended up taking Dookie to a ferret specialist, spending a lot of money and was told she may have Adrenal Cancer.  Explanations of what this meant were very vague and the whole ordeal was very impersonal.  I know Dookie needed help but my gut was telling me this wasn’t the place to get it.  If I knew then what I know now, I could have saved hundreds.  The bottom line was Dookie needed help!
I’m proud to say my spiritual bond with God is strong, and believe me a LOT of my prayers have been for guidance and help in caring for my baby.  I was scared and nervous and needed help.  Out of the blue, my neighbor gave me a MKARESQ business card and the information he got with his ferret in case it might help.  I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a ferret shelter.  From this point on we have had brighter days.
Kris and Mary Mewton have extended their home and their hearts to hundreds of fuzzies.  When I called them nervous and scared on a holiday weekend, they welcomed and comforted me.  It just so happened that they had surgeries scheduled that week and we got Dookie in too.
Dookie had a double Adrenalectimy on September 6, 2000.  The surgery was successful and Dookie was doing better.  Kris, Mary and I get together every few weeks to make “Gravy”.  Dookie is an extremely fussy eater and it is all she will eat, well that chicken breast and cantaloupe.  I know that’s a weird diet but I have tried everything.
I am sad to say that Dookie’s Adrenal symptoms came back right before Christmas, that just happens sometimes, but we got her the 4month depot of Lupron and to help her symptoms and it is working!  My poor little girl has been sick on and off and every time MKARESQ has been there to help me with their support and put me in contact with others who have helped Dookie..
The past six months have been difficult.  Dookie stays healthy and then catches a bug.  She is currently sick and this time it’s pretty bad, there is hope though.  If it weren’t for Kris and Mary and the shelter I would probably be falling apart.  May God bless them in all they do!
One more thing I’d like to add, in December I decided to foster one of the older shelter ferrets.  His name is Bud and like all their fuzzies, he is very special to Kris and Mary.  He is such a good boy between 6 and 8 years old.  The Budster puts a smile on my face everyday at just the right time.  With Dookie being so sick, Bud has really been a source of happiness to me.

 Sincerely, Justine

Kris and Mary

What you two is simply wonderful! We were so afraid of our ferrets being put down. With life changes (marriage then 2 children) we just simply counted keep up with our little fuzzies. After seeing your setup and the way you two love ferrets I am comforted in knowing that Albie, Bandit and Cinnamon will be alright.

Thank you so much for doing what you do! Beth, Mike, Alexia and Meghan

I would like to add to the letters others have shared about Kris and Mary.

I have been a Licensed Veterinary Technician for 16 years so I have some knowledge of animal husbandry.  When I graduated tech school ferrets were still illegal in Michigan so I knew nothing of them.  When I met my husband close to 5 years ago, he had ferrets.  I had dogs and several cats and knew if our lives were going to mesh I would have to learn to accept his ferrets.
Once I got to know them, I fell in love (yes with both him and his ferrets).   We lost one of them to stomach cancer and just couldn't seem to fill the void.   Being in the veterinary field I have some strong feelings about breeders and pet shops.  I thought if we could find a rescue group we could make a difference for a ferret who needed us as much as we needed them.  My husband found the name of MKARESQ and called Mary.     He liked her on the phone instantly and we went to see "the babies".  After living with ferrets for a while I came to realize how much time and effort it takes to keep them and
their environment clean.  I was greatly impressed with the shelter and the condition of all the ferrets there.  They were happy and loved.    It showed in how much information Kris and Mary were able to supply about all of their personalities as well as interactions between humans and ferrets.  We left
that day with not just one baby, but 3!     We went to the shelter again in June 2000 on our anniversary and adopted 2 more babies.  Mary has been more than helpful in assisting my learning process of ferret diseases.  She is always there to answer questions and lend the knowledge of prior experiences.
She has gone to great lengths in nursing care as anyone can see in the pictures of Geezer on their website- that I am not sure myself if I would have had the patience to see through.  No one knows until he/she is in that situation what lengths you would go through to take care of your sick baby.
I can think of NO ONE I would trust more to care for my babies if something happened to my husband or myself.  We currently have 9 fuzzies. Two of them are deaf, one has cataracts and cannot see well, one has lymphoma which is in and out of remission the last year, and one has adrenal disease and will
undergo surgery this week.  You can be assured if I have questions, Mary will be the first I call for advice.
A HUGE hug and thank you to Kris and Mary for helping to make and keep our family full of love and joy with our wonderful fuzzies.

    Dear Kris and Mary,

I was just checking out your web-site and reading about Geezer....he is such a special boy, you have done such a good job with him!

I went to Kris and Mary's to make gravy again on Friday night, I have to say we're getting pretty good at it.  I love visiting there home/ shelter.  Geezer was out when I got there and I had the opportunity to play with him, that little guy has come a long way thanks to the extensive efforts of Mary & Kris.  Geez must have smelled my guys on me because he got really frisky when I started rubbing his neck. He was dookin' and giving me (love?) nibbles.....I could feel him "gumming" me since his teeth are barely there!

Watching Kris and Mary constantly giving care and attention to their sick fuzzies has truly helped my spirit.  My baby has been sick on and off with adrenal disease, lately more on than off, and I don't know what I would do without their support.

    THANK YOU!!!!

        Love,

                        Justine

I have been hearing some very disturbing RUMORS lately...and i am WAY
pissed...
and you have known me for a long time...i rarely get really mad...but i am
NOW!!!!

There is a shelter in Michigan...MKARESQ...they are one of the most
concientiously run shelters i have ever seen...their cleaning standards
are over and above any i have seen anywhere...
why?.. do you ask?...because their personal ferrets have ADV...with all
the questions about ADV...i can see some concern...but i can vouch that
Mary and Kris maintain the strictest, most rigid regime for sanitizing and
keeping this seperate...and they succed 100%...

I have been there...i have SEEN the precautions they take...besides the
sanitizing regime...they have tested each and every one of the shelter
kids...long time residents and newcomers...all are ADV NEGATIVE!!!...could
they REMAIN negative if Kris and Mary did not take the rigid precautions
that they do?..day in and day out?...never skimping on ANY
precaution?..never saying.."oh..it won't hurt just this once to let our
guard down"?...no..they wouldn't...and mary and kris NEVER would...they
love the ferrets too much...they fight a hard fight each and every
day...and they win that hard fight each and every day...they fight in
their home for it...and they fight publicly to help the eventual win over
ADV...

I understand the cautions needing to be taken in regards to shelters that
are both ADV+ and ADV-...but let me put to rest that MKARESQ maintains
it's integrity...i am POSITIVE of this...

Why do petty people try to hurt or put question on people with as much
integrity and good in them as mary and kris have?

For anyone who has heard these rotten rumors about MKARESQ...they are
totally UNTRUE!!!!...i, personally, would not hesitate to take my own
personal ferrets up to mary and kris to babysit or for any reason...i am
THAT secure in their precautions about ADV...

Yes..mary and kris are friends of mine...of that...i am most proud...but
aside from that...you could not ask for a safer shelter to adopt
from...because of their ADV kids...they take many more precautions than
most shelters that are negative...they know the pain and heartbreak from
first hand experience if they do not maintain that strict code...

Please do not listen to these rumors...and if someone tells them to
you...please set them straight...
i am not just sticking up for a friend here...i have SEEN what they do to
be a safe shelter...

Kat
